You pay your taxes, right?

Nexus Doesn't Qualify for Property Tax Exemption.

They should pay theirs.

Nexus, a Tax-Dodger?

Due to some poor reporting by the Mille Lacs Messenger, most people are under the misconception that Nexus is Property Tax Exempt. This is not true! Although they define themselves as a Not-For-Profit Tax Exempt Corporation, Nexus does not qualify for property tax exemption in the state of Minnesota. Apparently there has been a campaign, led by Mayor Larry Milton, Nexus CEO Jim D'Angelo, and the Mille Lacs Messenger to mis-lead the public into believing that Nexus does not currently pay property taxes, and will not have to pay property taxes on the new facility they plan to build. But Nexus DOES pay property taxes!

It's a new definition of "BAD NEWS".

First, Nexus donated $348,193 to Nexus. Then Nexus donated over $1 million dollars to... Nexus. Nexus was its ONLY contributor in 2004. Who are they trying to bamboozle?

"I can't say enough about how grateful we are to the county for coming through with the tax exempt status," Milton said.

A few weeks ago, the Bradbury Township Clerk  said, "Oh, Nexus is tax exempt."

"No, Not PROPERTY tax" said our reporter.

"Oh yes, they are. I read it in the paper, [the Messenger]"

She now knows the truth.

Mayor Provides False Information

Coming through with tax exempt status? Didn't happen. Mayor Milton should not have said it. The Mille Lacs Messenger should not have reported it. It isn't true folks.

Can You Make a Difference?

Yes you can!

Not only does Nexus not qualify for property tax exemption, it has been trying (and failing) for years to get it, even losing in the tax courts. Recently, Nexus CEO Jim D'Angelo wrote a letter to Mille Lacs County Commissioner Frank Courteau, threatening that Nexus would leave Mille Lacs County if they were once again denied property tax exemption. On Tuesday, July 17, Paul Smith, the new Executive Administrator for Mille Lacs Academy attended a county commission board meeting at the court house in Milaca. He is reported to have said that if Nexus is denied tax exemption, they will be leaving the state of Minnesota.

It is understandable why Nexus would want property tax exemption. But why in the world would the city want it?

Property Tax on a New Facility

Using the Property Tax Calculator from the Minnesota League of Cities website, we were able to estimate the amount Nexus would be taxed on a $10 million dollar facility within the city limits of Onamia. We used the rate of 1.5 in our calculation, which is half-way between residential and commercial. Our results:

$378,806.00 in property taxes per year!
