D'Angelo
Plays Hardball with Hannabelle
Mille Lacs News Staff Writer
As if forcing his sex offenders into her residential
neighborhood - next to children, senior citizens, and daycare weren't bad
enough, recently James D'Angelo - CEO of NEXUS, a multi-million
dollar corporation which alleges it cannot afford to pay property taxes,
hired both a lawyer and a Mille Lacs County deputy sheriff to serve our own
Hannabelle with a Goliath vs David law suit for "Defamation". Also listed as
co-plaintiff on the law suit drafted by the Minneapolis Park Avenue law firm
of Mahoney, Dougherty and Mahoney, is NEXUS Board Member Peter Freeman,
a social work instructor at the College of St. Catherine and St. Thomas
University.
The Plaintiffs' Complaint, which has yet to be filed with the
Fourth Judicial District Court in Hennepin County, charges Hannabelle with
making "numerous false and defamatory statements" about James D'Angelo
in The Mille Lacs News and The Bradbury Buzzz.
Among other things mentioned on the document, Hannabelle is attributed to
have said that
D'Angelo is:
egocentric
arrogant
a snake
narcissistic
cold-blooded
an insensitive numbskull
without a clue
missing a heart
a liar
lacking character
a predator who preys on the elderly and
infirmed
Responding to D'Angelo's complaints, Hannabelle had this to
say:
"Well okay, l might have gone a little
bit too far. I mean, I've seen that he has arms and legs so literally he
isn't a real snake. And if he didn't actually have a heart beating
in his body, he wouldn't be able to force sex offenders into our
neighborhood, would he? So technically he must have one tucked in there
somewhere. I guess I'm guilty of using metaphors. So sue me. However, in
order to sue for Defamation of Character, it must first be established that
there exists character of which to defame. I stand by everything I've said,
written, and published."
Hannabelle disputes some of the other complaints listed in
the lawsuit.
"If NEXUS can't afford to pay property
taxes as D'Angelo was quoted in the Mille Lacs Messenger as having said,
yes I'd say that he "mismanaged his finances". Mille Lacs Academy alone
makes over $22,000 per day - and they can't pay their taxes??? But perhaps
CFO Alan Nordby's partially to blame... Either way, as CEO, the buck stops
with D'Angelo. He is
responsible. Let's face it, the guy is always looking for a free lunch -
whether it be tax exemption, grants, tax abatement, or trying to get the
city of Onamia to pay for stuff NEXUS should pay for."
In Peter Freeman's part of the lawsuit, the
Complaint says that Hannabelle has
"caused Peter Freeman embarrassment and
injured his reputation. The statements tend to lower Peter Freeman's
co-workers' estimation of him. The statements tend to call into question his
competence as a member of the Department of Social Work. The statements have
caused monetary damages in an amount yet to be determined."
Hannabelle responds
"Why would 24 college professors' estimation of
Peter Freeman be lowered by finding out what he is engaging in with NEXUS -
unless they disapprove of what he's doing, how he's doing it, and who he is
doing it to?
It was Peter Freeman's choice
to do things which would
embarrass him and injure his reputation if discovered by his colleagues. As an educated member of the Department of
Social Work, he's forcing sex offenders into a residential neighborhood whose
primary residents are vulnerable??? Children, Senior Citizens, THREE Daycare
centers??? He should know better! He SHOULD be embarrassed! EVERYONE should question his competence!
His actions and behavior are despicable!"
Hannabelle pointed out that among the classes Peter
teaches is a course called 'Communication and Interviewing'.
"Yeah, its ironic. When I tried to
interview him on the telephone, his chosen method of communication
was to hang up on me right after I identified myself and before I could say
anything. CLICK. Then he sent me
an email deferring to D'Angelo and which said "Thank you for your
interest in Nexus Treatment Centers"... What kind of person would do such a
cruel and insensitive
thing? Is this what he teaches his students? It is also ironic that Peter's current research interests include 'Scapegoating'.
It figures.
As far as Peter's monetary damages...
well, I suppose Mark Manderfeld, his lawyer hasn't figured out the final
bill yet. I've been paying a lawyer too - since last April - in an attempt
to protect my mom from invading sex offenders- brought to me compliments of
D'Angelo and Freeman!!! Are these Plaintiffs going to reimburse me for MY
expenses, lawyer fees, and the estimated $50,000 loss in my property values
when they arrive? Or do I have to sue them?"
Included in the lawsuit is the charge against
Hannabelle that
"She has placed her opinions on these issues on her blogs which are available for
the entire world to see. She has now attempted to block Nexus and its
attorneys from viewing her websites."
The lawsuit also states that although
D'Angelo is a public figure, Peter Freeman is not.
"He is now..." said Hannabelle.
